3 Things You Need To Do Before Painting

Painting a room is one of the fastest ways to transform your home, but the secret to a professional-looking finish isn’t just in the paint—it’s in the preparation. Skipping prep work often leads to peeling, uneven colors, and visible flaws.

Before you open that paint can, here are three essential things you need to do to ensure a durable, beautiful result.

1. Clean the Walls Thoroughly

Dust, grease, and grime are the enemies of new paint. If you paint over a dirty wall, the paint will not adhere properly and may peel later.

  • How to do it: Dust the walls, corners, and baseboards with a microfiber cloth. For high-traffic areas, kitchens, or bathrooms, wash the walls with a mild detergent and water, or a specialized cleaner like TSP.
  • Crucial step: Rinse with clean water and let the walls dry completely before painting.

2. Repair and Sand Surface Imperfections

A new coat of paint will highlight, not hide, dents, holes, and peeling paint. Taking the time to patch and smooth your walls creates a perfect canvas.

  • How to do it: Use a putty knife and spackling compound to fill in small holes or cracks.
  • Sanding: Once the spackle is dry, use fine-grit sandpaper (180–240 grit) to sand the patches until they are flush with the wall. Lightly sand any glossy surfaces to help the new paint stick.
  • Final Step: Wipe away all sanding dust with a damp cloth.

3. Protect and Mask the Area

Cleaning up paint splatters is not fun. Proper protection ensures you only paint what you intended.

  • Clear the room: Move furniture to the center of the room and cover it with plastic sheeting, or remove it entirely.
  • Drop cloths: Cover floors with canvas drop cloths, which are more durable and less slippery than plastic.
  • Painter’s tape: Apply painter’s tape along baseboards, door frames, windows, and the ceiling edge to ensure crisp lines. Remove outlet and light switch covers for a seamless finish.

By dedicating time to these three steps, you ensure that your hard work results in a durable, high-quality, professional finish.
